Growing up in a small town just outside Fort Worth, Texas, travel was never about luxury for my family—it was about adventure, connection, and making memories that would last a lifetime. My mom was a teacher, which meant summers, spring breaks, and winter vacations were our time to pack up the van and hit the road. And when I say “pack up,” I mean really pack up—coolers full of homemade sandwiches, suitcases squeezed between our seats, and a route that often included stops at quirky roadside attractions.
We weren’t wealthy by any means, but my parents found ways to make travel possible. We stayed in budget motels or with family and friends, stretching our dollars so we could experience everything from the Grand Canyon’s breathtaking views to the quiet beauty of Pawleys Island, South Carolina. It was my parents’ 30th wedding anniversary as well, and from the moment I set foot on the island, I knew I had fallen in love. The vibrant landscapes, the warmth of the Aloha spirit—it was unlike anything I had ever experienced. I remember crying when we left, promising myself that one day, I would return.
As I got older, my love for travel only deepened. When my sister studied abroad in Tuscany, I knew I had to visit her, even though my budget at the time came from waiting tables. I borrowed a friend’s travel backpack, snagged the cheapest flights I could find, and set off for Italy. Those days spent wandering through the rolling hills of Tuscany, savoring fresh Italian food, and immersing myself in a new culture were transformative. My sister and I wrapped up her semester by hopping from Brussels to Amsterdam to Barcelona, each destination leaving me more in awe of the world. I came home broke—but with a full heart and a new perspective on life.
Looking back, I realize just how lucky I was to experience travel in such a meaningful way. My parents taught me that it doesn’t take a fortune to create unforgettable experiences—it takes intention, curiosity, and a willingness to explore.
